Gene Bearden completed the game without help from the bullpen at Griffith
Stadium as the Washington Nationals won in their last at-bat beating the New
York Yankees by the count of 4 to 3.

Washington scored the deciding run in the 9th inning.  Johnny Mize hit a
bases-empty home run making Washington the victors to the delight of the home
town faithful.  New York out-hit Washington 11 to 8, but Washington ended up
with more runs.  

The winning pitcher was Bearden(6-1) who allowed 3 runs for the game. Robin
Roberts(0-1) was hit with the loss.  He allowed 3 homeruns in 8 innings of
work.  

'I struggled a bit out there today,' Bearden said, 'but I toughed it out and
we got the win.'
