Chicago was unable to claim the lead after Philadelphia went ahead in the 2nd inning with 3 runs. Esper opened up the inning nicely when he reached on an error. Billy Hamilton next to the plate and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Ed Delahanty then drew a walk. Billy Shindle stepped in and he tripled plating two runs. Sam Thompson came to the plate and drew a walk. Thompson got a great jump and stole second easily. Al Myers followed next and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring the final run of the inning. That was all the offense they were to need. Chicago had 7 hits in the game while Philadelphia had 3, but Philadelphia had the more timely hits. The victory was credited to Esper(3-7) who went the distance, allowing 3 runs. Ed Stein(1-3) ended up with the loss. He had trouble throwing strikes and issued 15 walks in 8 innings.
