Bob Groom retired 10 batters on strikeouts and Rollie Zeider slammed a homerun
and had 2 RBI as the Detroit Tigers beat the Philadelphia-AL Athletics by a
score of 7 to 4.
Groom(4-9) pitched well for Detroit in their victory. He went 8 and 1/3
innings surrendering 11 hits and 1 walk and surrendered 2 'round-trippers'.
Detroit rapped out 13 hits for the afternoon.
Earl Hamilton earned the save, his 1st. The loss was charged to Art
Fromme(2-5). He got hammered, allowing 11 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.
The Detroit fans were thrilled by the performance put forth by Groom, but it
was clearly his strikeouts that they enjoyed most. 'When he reached 10
strikeouts the fans showed him their appreciation with a loud cheer.' Jim
Murphy said following the game.
