Billy Pierce pitched a complete game as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the
Washington Nationals in 10 innings by the score of 3 to 2 at Forbes
Field.

Both teams had scored 2 runs after nine full innings.  Pittsburgh ended up
winning it in the 10th inning.  Al Dark tripled.  After an out was recorded,
Monte Irvin stepped in and he was walked intentionally.  Red Schoendienst
then was walked intentionally to load the bases.  Mickey Vernon followed and
he drew a walk resulting in a mighty exciting win for Pittsburgh and the
28,961 home town fans in attendance.  Pittsburgh finished with 8 hits in the
victory.  

The victory was credited to Pierce(6-6) who went the distance, allowing 2
runs. Joe Nuxhall(4-10) took the loss in relief.  He gave up 1 hit and 3
walks in 1/3 of an inning.
