In a tight game it was the Chicago-NL Cubs 9, the slumping Philadelphia-AL
Athletics 7 in 10 innings at Connie Mack Stadium.
Both teams had scored 7 runs after nine full innings. Chicago-NL won the hard
fought contest in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Eddie Yost was
the sparkplug when he ripped a solo home run. Duke Snider came next and he
doubled. Frank Thomas then was walked intentionally. After another out,
Carl Furillo stepped in and he singled scoring the final run of the inning.
The Philadelphia-AL offense proved no trouble in the bottom of the 10th.
Harry Brecheen(4-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 and 2/3 innings and
allowing no runs. Johnny Schmitz(2-6) was given the loss in relief. He
allowed 2 runs and 3 hits in 1 inning.
