Larry Doby homered as the Cincinnati Reds topped the Washington Nationals by a
score of 5 to 4 at Crosley Field.

In the bottom of the 4th inning Cincinnati scored 4 runs when they came up
with 3 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Del Crandall who
made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he rifled a three-run blast.
Washington had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Willard Nixon(1-5) went 7 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Nixon got help
from Don Bessent who earned his 20th save. The loss was charged to Carl
Erskine(2-3). He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 2/3
innings.

'This was a tough loss,' said Gordy Renaud, 'the kind that sticks with you for
awhile.'
