Christy Mathewson came through with a solid 11 innings as the Brooklyn Dodgers
defeated the Boston-AL Red Sox in 14 innings 1 to 0 at Washington Park.
The score was knotted at zero after nine innings. Brooklyn ended up winning
it in the 14th inning. Del Howard reached on an error. Howard took his lead
and swiped second. George Stovall then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Mike
Donlin followed next and he was walked intentionally. Johnny Kling stepped
into the box and would hit into a force play resulting in an exciting win for
Brooklyn and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. Brooklyn
had only 6 hits for the game.
George Winter(3-0) went 3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Walter
Johnson(5-7) ended up with the loss. He was the victim of a defensive lapse
and did not allow an earned run in the game.
Brooklyn now has a record of a division leading 33-20. With this loss,
Boston-AL has a 4-6 record of late, 20-35, worst in the division overall.
