Al Spalding pitched a complete game and left fielder Ross Barnes had 4 hits
and 6 RBI at 23rd Street Grounds where the Boston Red Stockings beat the
Chicago White Stockings by the score of 28 to 26.
Barnes was unconscious out there. While Chicago pitching was serving
softballs up there for him to hit, the Chicago fans were serving up some
hardball barbs when he entered the batter's box. But he just used it as fuel
for the fire. He lined a one-base hit in the 1st inning, ripped a base-hit
knocking in a run in the 5th inning, tripled plating two runs in the 7th
inning and ripped a single scoring two baserunners in the 7th inning. Boston
bats were very productive in the 1st inning which saw them plate 9 runs on 7
hits and the 7th inning when they had 9 runs on 7 hits. The Boston offense
smacked the Chicago pitching staff around, scoring in 8 of the 9 innings.
The win was credited to Spalding(13-8) who went the whole way allowing 26
runs. Dan Collins(0-1) was hit with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 27
hits and 2 walks in 9 innings.
