Heinie Zimmerman collected 2 extra-base hits as the Chicago Cubs defeated the
New York Giants by the score of 6 to 5 at West Side Grounds.
Chicago scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 8th inning. Lefty
Leifield delivered a base-hit. Tommy Leach stepped into the batter's box and
he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Johnny Evers then laced a one-base hit. Otis
Clymer followed next and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring the run. New York
had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Leifield(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. The loss
was charged to Christy Mathewson(4-7). He surrendered 6 runs and 16 hits in
8 innings.
The Chicago ballclub's record now stands at a league leading 26-21. New York
has a record of 21-21 after the loss.
