Powell was just too much for Washington. He gave his hometown fans a game they'll never forget! He had excellent control, walking only one. The tension built to a fever pitch. After the 8th inning everybody in the ballpark was anticipating what would happen in the 9th. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again. Walter Johnson(0-1) ended up with the loss. It took a while to pry Powell way from his teammates as they all wanted to show their appreciation and joy. Finally, however, Jimmy McAleer got to offer his own congratulations with a big bear hug and the comment, 'That was one of the best pitched games I have seen in all my years in baseball - Powell was masterful out there this afternoon!'
