Monte Ward blanked Cincinnati in a very well-pitched complete game and Lew
Brown had 5 hits and 7 RBI as the Providence Grays ballclub embarrassed the
Cincinnati Reds by the count of 43 to 0.
Brown enjoyed a great day at the plate. Every time he came up in the latter
innings, the crowd was on their feet cheering. He doubled scoring two
baserunners in the 1st inning, tripled which plated a run in the 4th inning,
tripled bringing in a run in the 5th inning, doubled in the 7th inning and
tripled which was good for two runs in the 7th inning. Providence bats were
very productive in the 6th inning when they had 10 runs on 11 hits and the
7th inning which saw them score 12 runs on 11 hits. The Providence offense
was as consistent as it was powerful. They scored in every inning, making a
joke of the Cincinnati pitching.
Ward(11-9) was credited with the shutout, his first of the year. Cal
McVey(0-1) was given the loss. He was touched for 45 hits and 2 walks in 8
innings.
