Herman Long slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Kid Nichols tossed a complete
game at South End Grounds where the Boston Beaneaters beat the Pittsburg
Pirates 4 to 3.

Long had a good day at the plate. He hit a bases-empty home run in the 2nd
inning and cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 8th inning.
Pittsburg threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

The victory went to Nichols(4-1) who went the distance allowing 3 runs. Deacon
Phillippe(3-5) was tagged with the loss. When questioned about the loss,
Fred Clarke said, 'The fans got to see an exciting game out there this
afternoon. Unfortunately, we couldn't get it done this time. Next time,
though, we'll be the clubhouse with all the smiles.'
