Christy Mathewson went the distance and second baseman Larry Doyle had 2 base
hits at Polo Grounds as the New York Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7 to

New York had 4 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 5th inning when they
came up with 5 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Fred
Merkle who electrified Polo Grounds when he stroked a base-hit which was good
for two runs. New York finished with 14 hits in the victory.

The win was credited to Mathewson(10-2) who went the whole way allowing 4
