First baseman Ted Kluszewski had 2 base hits at Wrigely Field as the Cincinnati Reds pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Chicago-NL Cubs by the count of 3 to 2. Cincinnati scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Pee Wee Reese kicked off the action when he reached on an error. Gil McDougald stepped up next and he delivered a one-base hit. Whitey Lockman then lined a base-hit knocking in a run. Two outs later Kluszewski came to the plate and singled scoring the final run of the inning. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning. The winning pitcher was Willard Schmidt(6-2) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Don Bessent preserved the game for Schmidt, recording his his 17th save. Bob Miller(1-5) suffered the loss in relief. He was the victim of a defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game. After the game, it took a long while before Ron Mead emerged from his office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood this afternoon, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more light-hearted over in the Cincinnati locker room.'
