1,416 fans watched an exciting game at American League Park.  The Washington
Nationals topped the Detroit Tigers by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.

Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings.  Washington came out
the victor in the 12th inning.  John Knight ripped a one-base hit.  Jack
Graney stepped up to the plate and he lined a base-hit.  Graney took second
on the throw.  Larry Doyle then delivered a single giving Washington the
victory as 1,416 happy fans celebrated wildly.  Washington totaled 13 hits on
the afternoon.  

George Chalmers(1-2) allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Elmer Knetzer(4-7) was hit with the loss in relief.  With this win,
Washington has a 27-33 record.  They have been 4-6 lately.  With this loss,
Detroit has a 3-7 record of late, 19-41, worst in the division overall.
