WEB GEMS- Bot 6th: Jimmy Archer blocked the plate, saving a run!

In a great finish the Detroit Tigers came back in the top of the ninth and
held on to win over the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 5 to 4 at Forbes
Field.

Detroit had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 2 runs
utilizing 2 base hits. After two were out Vin Campbell began the rally when
he doubled. Bobby Veach next to the plate and he was walked intentionally.
Zack Wheat then drew a walk to load the bases. Tillie Walker followed next
and he reached on an error. Walker stepped into the box and laced a one-base
hit bringing in two baserunners. Detroit won despite being out-hit by
Pittsburgh 13 hits to 9.

Bob Harmon(3-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 4
runs. Harmon got help from Wilbur Cooper who earned his 6th save. The loss
was charged to Jim Scott(3-2) in relief. He was pinned with the loss despite
not allowing an earned run in his 1 inning of work.

'The only way this one could have been better', said Harmon, 'was if we had
played it at home.'
