Jimmy Ryan had 4 hits as the Chicago Colts beat the St. Louis Browns by a
score of 8 to 6.
It seemed that St. Louis pitching was serving up softballs for Ryan to hit.
He laced a base-hit in the 1st inning, stroked a single bringing home two
baserunners in the 2nd inning, tripled which plated a run in the 6th inning
and brought the hometown folks to their feet with a Grand Slammer in the 8th
inning. Chicago had 12 hits for the game and St. Louis had 9.
The win went to Tom Parrott(1-0) who allowed 6 runs in 8 innings. Parrott was
helped out by Gus McGinnis who recorded his 1st save. The loss was charged
to Kid Gleason(8-7). He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 12 hits
and 4 walks in 8 innings.
'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Cap Anson said after the game. 'Parrott did not have command of
his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to
pitch!'
