27,054 fans watched an exciting game at Forbes Field.  The smoking-hot
Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Philadelphia-AL Athletics by the slimmest of
margins, 4 to 3.

Both teams had scored 3 runs after nine full innings. Pittsburgh came out on
top in the 12th inning.  After an out was recorded, Willie Mays smashed a
solo-shot out of the park making Pittsburgh the victors to the delight of the
home town faithful.  Pittsburgh had a total of 9 hits for the game.  

The victory went to Jack Harshman(3-2) who went 4 innings, allowing no runs.
Lew Burdette(3-4) was the losing pitcher in relief.  He gave up 1 run and 1
hit in 1/3 of an inning.
