10,158 fans were treated to a fine game at Griffith Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The Washington Nationals won by the
slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.

The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings.  Finally, Washington
prevailed in the 14th inning.  After an out was recorded, Ray Boone kicked
off the action when he doubled.  One out later, Bill Werle stepped in and he
singled resulting in a run.  Dom Dimaggio then doubled.  Bobby Doerr was up
next and he reached on an error making Washington the winners and sending the
10,158 fans home happy.  Washington managed 14 hits in their victory.  

The win was credited to Werle(1-1) who went 2 innings allowing 1 run. Harry
Perkowski(0-1) took the loss in relief.  He surrendered 2 runs and 3 hits in
2/3 of an inning.  

With this win, Washington has a 27-39 record.  They have been 3-7 lately.
With the loss New York-AL now has a record of 31-31.
