Bob Lemon had a strong outing as the Philadelphia-AL Athletics bested the
Boston-AL Red Sox in 11 innings 4 to 2 at Fenway Park.
Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings. Philadelphia-AL
came out the victor in the 11th inning. Hank Sauer opened up the inning
nicely when he ripped a single. Hank Thompson was next and he laid down a
sacrifice bunt. Willie Jones then lined a single knocking in a run. Jones
took second on the throw. Johnny Logan came up and he laced a base-knock
scoring the final run of the inning. Philadelphia-AL finished with 8 hits in
the victory.
Johnny Schmitz(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing
no runs. Fritz Dorish got the save, his 16th. Hoyt Wilhelm(4-2) was the
losing pitcher in relief.
