Center fielder Edgar Smith had 3 base hits and 2 RBI and Jim Whitney pitched a
complete game at South End Grounds as the Boston Beaneaters beat the dreadful
Philadelphia Quakers 11 to 7.

Whitney(14-8) earned his pay with a solid performance for Boston.  He went 9
innings allowing 9 hits and 1 walk.  Boston had 16 hits for the afternoon.

John Coleman(6-23) was charged with the loss.  He allowed Boston 11 runs in 8
innings of work.  With this win, Boston has a 24-13 record.  They have been
5-5 lately.  Philadelphia can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'.  Now
they have a miserable 2-8 record over the last couple weeks.
