Bob Ewing didn't allow a hit until the 6th inning and left fielder Fred Clarke
had 2 base hits at American League Park as the Washington Nationals beat the
Boston-AL Red Sox by the count of 3 to 1.

Ewing(5-4) had a solid outing for Washington.  He went 9 innings allowing 8
hits and 3 walks.  The right-handed Ewing lost a no-hitter when Billy
Sullivan singled with nobody out in the 6th inning.  Boston-AL threatened in
the 9th but their rally came up short.  

Bill Donovan(2-8) was the losing pitcher.  He pitched 7 innings giving up 10
hits and no walks. 'This was a tough loss,' said Dale Van Leven, 'the kind
that sticks with you for awhile.'
