Bobby Mathews went the distance and Dick Higham had 4 hits and 2 RBI at
Newington Park as the Baltimore Canaries beat the Philadelphia Athletics by
the count of 9 to 8.

Baltimore brought 4 runs across the plate in the 5th inning. The key at-bat
was by Higham who electrified Newington Park when he stroked a base-hit
plating two runs. Philadelphia threatened in the 9th but Baltimore was able
to put down the rally.

The win was credited to Mathews(9-10) who went the whole way allowing 8 runs.
Dick McBride(8-7) was the losing pitcher. Baltimore knocked him around a
bit, as he gave up 9 runs in 8 innings.

'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Bill Craver said after the game. 'Mathews did not have command
of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to
pitch!'
