Ralph Kiner smashed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Cincinnati Reds defeated
the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 5 to 4 at Crosley Field.

It was a good day for Cincinnati thanks to Kiner. He bombed a two-run dinger
in the 1st inning and cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 5th
inning. Pittsburgh made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push
the needed runs across.

The win went to Frank Smith(7-3) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Smith got
relief help from Stu Miller who gained credit for his 17th save. Joe
Black(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief. He gave up 1 run and 2 hits in 1
inning.

When questioned about the loss, Andy Spector said, 'The fans got to see an
exciting game out there this afternoon. Unfortunately, we couldn't get it
done this time. Next time, though, we'll be the clubhouse with all the
smiles.'
