Billy Pierce went 11 strong innings at Yankee Stadium as the Pittsburgh
Pirates beat the New York-AL Yankees in 11 innings by the count of 3 to
1.

The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings.  Pittsburgh was
victorious in the 11th inning.  After two were out Yogi Berra opened up the
rally as he stroked a base-hit, and an error was also committed.  Del Ennis
stepped up next and he stroked a one-base hit knocking in a run.  Ennis took
second on the throw.  Red Schoendienst then laced a single scoring the final
run of the inning.  Pittsburgh totaled 9 hits on the afternoon.

Pierce(4-5) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. Mel Parnell(5-5) was
given the loss in relief.  'Pierce took our guys to school' Robert Baker
said. 'Too bad he doesn't pitch for us - it would make my job a whole lot
easier!'
