First baseman Mickey Vernon had 3 base hits as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated
the Cincinnati Reds in 13 innings by a score of 3 to 2 at Crosley
Field.

Both teams had scored 2 runs after nine full innings.  Finally, Pittsburgh
pulled the game out in the 13th inning.  Monte Irvin hit a single.  After an
out was recorded, Bobby Thomson stepped up to the plate and he doubled.  Bill
Serena then was walked intentionally to load the bases.  Vernon followed next
and he drew a walk scoring the run.  Pittsburgh had a total of 14 hits for
the game.  

The winning pitcher was Ellis Kinder(4-1) who allowed no runs in 2 innings.
Warren Hacker(3-4) took the loss in relief.  He pitched 1 inning giving up 2
hits and 2 walks.
