Whitey Ford had a complete game at Wrigely Field where the Chicago-NL Cubs
beat the New York-AL Yankees 2 to 1.
New York-AL fell behind quickly as the Chicago-NL offense came through in the
first inning scoring 2 runs on 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Dave
Philley jump-started the rally as he tripled. Duke Snider stepped up next
and he ripped a base-knock, and an error was also committed, plating a run.
Ferris Fain followed, but he was set down on strikes. Ernie Banks followed
next and he laced a base-knock scoring the final run of the inning. That
early scoring was all that Ford(13-1) needed. Chicago-NL had only 6 hits for
the game.
Herm Wehmeier(10-2) took the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 3 walks in 8
innings. 'I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I
thought it was nothing.' Ford said. 'I was lucky I got a win because I
couldn't put the ball where I wanted it.'
