One run was the difference at Griffith Stadium as the Cincinnati Reds defeated
the Washington Nationals in 12 innings 2 to 1.

Both teams had scored 1 runs after nine full innings.  Cincinnati came out the
victor in the 12th inning.  After an out was recorded, Hank Bauer doubled.
Joe Astroth came next and he laced a one-base hit scoring the run.  Astroth
took second on the throw.  Cincinnati won despite being out-hit by Washington
9 hits to 6.  

Willard Schmidt(9-2) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Don
Bessent gained credit for his 24th save.  Roy Face(1-4) was tagged with the
loss in relief.  

The Cincinnati ballclub's record now stands at 43-36. With the loss Washington
now has a record of 38-41.
