Ed Seward allowed Bill Sharsig to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as
the Cincinnati Red Stockings were badly beaten by the Philadelphia Athletics,
17 to 4.

Philadelphia promptly took the lead in their half of the first plating one
baserunner.  Philadelphia bats were very productive in the 2nd inning plating
4 runs, the 7th inning which saw them score 5 runs on 3 hits and the 9th
inning with 4 runs.  Philadelphia had many opportunities throughout the game
and scored in 6 separate innings.  

The winning pitcher was Seward(18-5) who allowed 4 runs for the game. Mike
Smith(4-8) ended up with the loss.  He couldn't find the strike zone and
allowed 13 walks in 9 innings.
