63,890 fans watched an exciting game at Yankee Stadium.  The Boston Red Sox
topped the New York Yankees by the slimmest of margins, 2 to 1.

The game was won by Boston when they scored a run in the 9th inning.  After an
out was recorded, Wally Westlake delivered a one-base hit.  Al Zarilla
followed next and he banged out a single.  Birdie Tebbetts then drew a walk
to load the bases.  Joe Gordon was up next and he drew a walk scoring the
run.  New York proved to be no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.  

Tommy Byrne(4-4) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Ken
Raffensberger(1-2) was the loser.  He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 8
hits and 4 walks.
