Billy Pierce reeled off a total of 13 strikeouts as the Pittsburgh Pirates
defeated the Chicago-NL Cubs 1 to 0 at Forbes Field.

Pierce(11-3) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the
Chicago-NL batters. He allowed just 4 hits and 1 walk in 8 and 2/3 innings.
Chicago-NL tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.

Jim Konstanty preserved the game for Pierce, recording his his 17th save. The
losing pitcher was Robin Roberts(16-6). He surrendered only 1 run and 4 hits
in 8 innings.

Andy Spector was asked about the performance of Pierce, 'He had his good stuff
out there tonight. The fans really get into it when the strikeouts start
mounting up - and that seems to give him even more adrenalin.'
