In a tight game it was the Pittsburgh Pirates 5, the Boston Red Sox 3 at
Fenway Park.

Pittsburgh jumped on top of Boston in the top of the 5th inning with 2 runs on
2 base hits.  After an out was recorded, Bobby Thomson got things rolling
when he reached on an error.  One out later, Billy Johnson came to the plate
and tripled resulting in a run.  Hoot Evers then delivered a base-hit scoring
the final run of the inning.  Pittsburgh out-hit Boston for the game, 13 hits
to 10.  

The win was credited to Eddie Lopat(1-11) who went 7 innings allowing 2 runs.
Lopat got help from Vic Lombardi who was credited with his 11th save.  Rex
Barney(8-4) was the losing pitcher.  He was a hard-luck loser, pitching 6
innings and not allowing an earned run.
