Third baseman Eddie Mathews left the yard and had 3 RBI as the Chicago-NL Cubs
bested the Pittsburgh Pirates 5 to 4 at Forbes Field.

Chicago-NL came up with 3 runs in the top of the 4th inning. After an out was
recorded, Ferris Fain started the attack as he drew a walk. Ernie Banks
followed next and he slapped a single. Mathews then belted a three-run
homer. Pittsburgh threatened in the 9th but Chicago-NL was able to put down
the rally.

Whitey Ford(14-2) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings. Ford
got help from Tom Gorman who earned his 6th save. The losing pitcher was
Early Wynn(6-9).

Andy Spector was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our
guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one.
That is what really ticks me off!'
