Hal Newhouser(9-6) and Harry Brecheen(4-6) locked horns in a pitcher's duel
with Newhouser and the Washington Nationals coming out on top of the
Chicago-NL Cubs 2 to 1.

Washington had 2 runs cross the plate in the 2nd inning when they came up with
3 base hits. Wes Westrum started the scoring when he took charge himself,
delivering a solo home run. Joe Adcock next to the plate and he banged out a
single. Granny Hamner then drew a walk. Irv Noren came up and he laced a
base-hit to load the bases. Newhouser came up to bat and drew a walk scoring
the final run of the inning. That early run support was enough for Newhouser
and Washington. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score.

Newhouser got help from Jim Konstanty who was credited with his 13th save.
