Bob Friend didn't allow a hit until the 6th inning at Forbes Field where the
Pittsburgh Pirates beat the reeling Brooklyn Dodgers 2 to 1.

Friend(6-8) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't give up
much, just 3 hits and no walks in 7 innings. The right-handed Friend lost
his chance for a no-hitter when Roy McMillan doubled with nobody out in the
6th inning. Pittsburgh had 9 hits for the game and Brooklyn had 4.

Friend got relief help from Jim Konstanty who gained credit for his 19th save.
Bobby Shantz(3-6) suffered the loss. He pitched 8 innings giving up 9 hits
and 3 walks.
