18,661 fans were treated to a fine game at Forbes Field as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The Pittsburgh Pirates won by the
slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.

The deciding run was scored by Pittsburgh in the 8th.  Red Schoendienst
slapped a one-base hit.  Chet Nichols next to the plate and he laid down a
sacrifice bunt.  After another out, Al Dark then ripped a single scoring the
run.  The game was a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.  

The winning pitcher was Nichols(6-2) who allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings.
Nichols got help from Ellis Kinder who was credited with his 13th save.  The
loss was charged to Howie Judson(2-7) in relief.  He pitched 1 inning
allowing 2 hits and no walks.
