Bill Donovan tossed a complete game and Sam Crawford had 5 hits and 4 RBI as
the Detroit Tigers rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Boston
Red Sox, 8 to 7.
Detroit had the winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning with 3 runs on 3
base hits. Oscar Stanage kicked off the action when he reached on an error.
Two outs later Donie Bush came to bat and reached on an error. Ty Cobb then
ripped a single to load the bases. Crawford came up and he smacked a
one-base hit scoring a run. Jim Delahanty came up to bat and doubled giving
Detroit the victory as 4,328 happy fans celebrated wildly. Detroit finished
with 16 hits in the victory.
The win was credited to Donovan(3-4) who went the whole way allowing 7 runs.
Ed Karger(5-5) was the loser. He got hit hard, allowing 15 hits and 4 walks
in 8 and 2/3 innings.
'Now there is a lesson in perseverance for you,' Crawford noted. 'It was
looking pretty dim there for a while, but we just kept plugging away and it
really paid off in spades! And it was great to see the crowd go crazy there
at the end!'
