The Philadelphia-NL Phillies nipped the Pittsburgh Pirates 4 to 3 at
Exposition Park in a hard fought contest.

Pittsburgh found themselves trailing quickly as the Philadelphia-NL bats came
through in the first inning scoring one runner. Pittsburgh tried
unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.

The winning pitcher was Carl Lundgren(4-3) who allowed 1 run in 6 innings. Bob
Rhoads recorded the save, his 5th. Frank Smith(10-6) was the loser. He gave
up 9 hits and 5 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.

Allan Kaufman was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our
guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one.
That is what really ticks me off!'
