Christy Mathewson went the distance at Brush Stadium where the amazing New
York Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals in 10 innings by the score of 7 to
6.
The game was deadlocked at 6 after nine full innings. Finally, New York
prevailed in the 10th inning. Fred Merkle slapped a base-hit. Merkle got a
great jump and stole second easily. One out later, Art Fletcher then worked
the squeeze play to perfection giving New York the victory and sending the
12,055 home-town fans home happy. This was a game of many highs and lows for
the home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 5 times in all.
Mathewson(14-3) allowed 6 runs on the game. Slim Sallee(10-10) absorbed the
loss. He pitched 9 and 1/3 innings giving up 11 hits and 2 walks.
