The Philadelphia Phillies bested the Washington Nationals by a 9 to 5 score at
Griffith Stadium.

Philadelphia scored 3 runs in the decisive top of the 7th inning.  Harry
Walker led off and got things going when he was hit by a pitch.  Stan Musial
stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk.  Jake Early then smacked a
three-run homer.  Philadelphia had a total of 11 hits for the game.  

Al Benton(1-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 1 inning. Steve Gromek earned his
9th save.  The losing pitcher was Bob Feller(8-8).  He surrendered 7 runs in
6 innings and saw his ERA increase from 3.81 to 4.07.
