Bill Sweeney completed the game without help from the bullpen and Bob
Blakiston had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Philadelphia Athletics pulled out
a win over the St. Louis Brown Stockings by a score of 5 to 4 at Oakdale
Park.
The game was decided in the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Jack
O'Brien ripped a one-base hit. One out later, Jerry Dorgan came to the plate
and reached on an error. John Mansell then reached on an error. Blakiston
stepped in and he ripped a base-knock resulting in an exciting win for
Philadelphia and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans.
Philadelphia totaled 10 hits on the afternoon.
Sweeney(3-7) lasted until the end allowing 4 runs for the win. Jumbo
McGinnis(14-11) absorbed the loss. 'I struggled a bit out there today,'
Sweeney said, 'but I toughed it out and we got the win.'
