Tommy Bond carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning and catcher Deacon White
had 3 base hits and 5 RBI as the Boston Red Stockings clobbered the
outmatched Louisville Grays, 16 to 5.
White was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided
much of the offense for the visitors. He tripled with all three baserunners
touching home in the 2nd inning, stroked a one-base hit in the 8th inning and
laced a single bringing in two baserunners in the 9th inning. Boston
provided plenty of action in the 2nd inning when they had 5 runs on 4 hits
and the 9th inning which saw them plate 7 runs on 6 hits. Boston managed 18
hits in their victory.
Bond(25-7), allowing 5 runs for the game, picked up the victory. The
right-handed Bond lost a no-hitter when Jumbo Latham singled with nobody out
in the 6th inning. Jim Devlin(21-11) absorbed the loss. Boston scored big
getting 16 runs off him in 9 innings.
