Sadie McMahon pitched a complete game at Jefferson St Grounds as the
Philadelphia Athletics beat the Cincinnati Red Stockings 7 to
6.

Philadelphia drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning
as they scored 5 runs on 5 base hits. Cincinnati threatened in the 9th but
their rally came up short.

McMahon(3-1) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 6 runs. Tony
Mullane(6-8) took the loss. By giving up 7 runs in 8 innings his ERA
increased from 2.45 to 2.71.

Gus Schmelz was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really
hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it is
easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just barely
get away that hurt so much - like this one!'
