Bobby Mathews was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game and first baseman Joe Start had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the New
York Mutuals defeated the Brooklyn Atlantics 17 to 10 at Union Grounds.
New York claimed the early lead in the first inning scoring 3 runs. Dave
Eggler led off and got things going when he reached on an error. Dick Higham
came to the plate and reached on an error. John Hatfield then reached on an
error knocking in a run. After an out was recorded, Candy Nelson stepped up
to the plate and he doubled, and an error was also committed, accounting for
two more runs. New York provided plenty of action in the 8th inning which
saw them plate 4 runs on 4 hits. New York kept the pressure on throughout
the contest as they scored in 6 different innings.
The win went to Mathews(15-14) who allowed 10 runs in the game. Jim
Britt(14-12) suffered the loss. He gave up 17 runs in 8 innings of work.
