Bill Phillips had a complete game and first baseman Jake Beckley had 2 base
hits at League Park as the Cincinnati Reds came back dramatically to top the
Chicago Orphans by the score of 8 to 7.
Cincinnati won the game with a rally in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs on 2
base hits. Harry Bay led off and started the attack as he laced a single,
and an error was also committed. Heinie Peitz followed next and he reached
on an error. Two outs later John Dobbs came to the plate and drew a walk to
load the bases. Dick Harley stepped in and he delivered a base-hit, and an
error was also committed, giving Cincinnati the win as 4,882 happy fans
joyfully celebrated. Cincinnati had 13 hits for the afternoon.
Phillips(7-14) got the victory, allowing 7 runs for the game. The loss was
charged to Jock Menefee(8-7). Bid McPhee was ebullient after the game, 'It's
great to win a hard fought game like that. Our guys just weren't going to be
denied. And did you see the fans - they were going wild! Yes sir, a very
enjoyable win this afternoon!'
