The Cincinnati Reds and the Detroit Tigers locked up in an exciting one-run
game at Palace of the Fans.  The final score was the Cincinnati Reds 5, the
Detroit Tigers 4.

Detroit was unable to recover after Cincinnati went ahead in the bottom of the
3rd inning plating one baserunner on 2 base hits.  Larry Schlafly ripped a
base-knock.  Two outs later Sam Mertes came to bat and reached on an error.
Dave Brain then stroked a single scoring the run.  Detroit had a chance in
the 9th but they came up short.  

The winning pitcher was Christy Mathewson(4-15) who allowed 4 runs in 8 and
1/3 innings. Jack Townsend was credited with his 3rd save.  George
Mullin(6-9) was given the loss.  He was unable to control the Cincinnati
offense and allowed 11 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.
