Mickey Vernon slammed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Municipal Stadium as the
Pittsburgh Pirates belted the Cleveland Indians by the count of 13 to
1.

Vernon had a big day at the plate.  He cracked a two-run shot in the 1st
inning, launched a three-run homer in the 3rd inning and stroked a one-base
hit in the 8th inning.  Overall Pittsburgh out-hit Cleveland 13 to 7.

Billy Pierce(9-7) went 6 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Pierce got help
from Bob Friend who was credited with his 5th save.  George Zuverink(6-9)
took the loss.  He surrended 3 homeruns in his 3 innings.  

'Vernon led the way - we just jumped on his back and let him take us,' Pierce
said. 'I'm glad I don't have to face him. I'm glad he's on my team.'
