Right fielder Mike Tiernan rocketed 2 homeruns and Mickey Welch had a strong outing at Polo Grounds where the red-hot New York Giants beat the Washington Nationals by the score of 5 to 2. New York came up with 3 runs in the 4th inning. Tiernan started the attack as he ripped a solo home run. After an out was recorded, Jim O'Rourke stepped in and he drew a walk. O'Rourke was safe on a stolen base. Art Whitney followed and he reached on an error. After another out, Welch came to the plate and drew a walk to load the bases. George Gore kept things alive and laced a base-hit with two more runners crossing home. New York totaled 9 hits on the afternoon. Welch(14-12) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Hank O'Day(17-14) was charged with the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 8 innings of work. When questioned about his counterpart after the game, O'Day was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were going to be in for a long night. Welch brought his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one or two bad pitches the entire game!
