First baseman Ferris Fain had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Chicago-NL Cubs
defeated the New York-AL Yankees 6 to 5 at Yankee Stadium.
Chicago-NL promptly took the lead in their half of the first plating 2 runs
using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Eddie Mathews started the rally
when he drew a walk. Duke Snider next to the plate and he ripped a base-hit.
Frank Thomas got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on
strikes. Fain followed next and he doubled driving home two runs. New
York-AL had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Sid Hudson(8-4) allowed 3 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Sal Maglie recorded the save, his 6th. Virgil Trucks(7-13) was hit
with the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 6 runs in 5 and 2/3
innings.
When questioned about the loss, Robert Baker said, 'The fans got to see an
exciting game out there this afternoon. Unfortunately, we couldn't get it
done this time. Next time, though, we'll be the clubhouse with all the
smiles.'
