Third baseman Eddie Mathews knocked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Chicago-NL
Cubs beat the struggling New York-AL Yankees by a score of 6 to
4.

Chicago-NL had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 2 runs
utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Mathews got things going
when he ripped a solo home run. Duke Snider stepped into the batter's box
and he blasted a solo shot. Chicago-NL won despite being out-hit by New
York-AL 14 hits to 11.

Tom Gorman(1-4) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 2/3 innings and
allowing no runs. Gorman was helped out by Harry Brecheen who recorded his
4th save. Sonny Dixon(1-1) absorbed the loss in relief.

'It's almost like the ball was trying to hit my bat,' Mathews said. 'Whenever
I would swing, the ball found the sweet spot.'
